WHAT DOES IQ DEPEND ON?
|
The IQ test
Some decades after Galtons intelligence tests in 1888, came William Stern in 1912 and coined the term "IQ". IQ was initially a term for a person's mental age, but soon became a term associated with intelligence. Many people was interested in this new way of investigating peoples mental stage.
Another highly relevant person in the history of intelligence is psychology professor Charles Spearman. He claimed to have found a connection between cognitive test and general intelligence, g. This finding made the hunt for finding out what IQ depends on more relevant than ever! Since if a link could be establish between IQ and g a true measure of intelligence would have been found.
The debate around what IQ depends on has turned into a scientific and technoscientific controversy. Different actors on the web discusses IQ dependency and they highly disagree! Even in the academic community there is a shared uncertainty on what IQ depends on. But in both places the questions are: Is it genetics? Is it environment, or education? Or is it something else?
This controversy seems to withhold several factions, the two most notably being the environmental group and the genetic group. These two group argues for their own understanding of what IQ depends on through academic literature, blogs, and websites. The actors can’t ignore each other, and relate very much to each other. The discussion on the web is for the most part quite open. Everyone with a computer can comment on a blog. The academic discussion however is harder to get into.
The controversy seems to be more and more relevant, especially because of recent studies of racial IQ difference that links to immigration. Today's high degree of immigration and the question of race diversity brings political quotations in to this scientific controversy.
Many of the vocal actors have an political agenda which influences their arguments. There is a lot of examples for this, lets only mention one here (you will find others going through the website).

He said there was a natural desire that all human beings should be equal but
Aside from political dimensions the search for knowledge and clarity on the subject itself seems be the two big reasons for engaging in this topic.
Controversies in the controversy
The controversy about IQ dependency has different parts to it:
First, many argue that IQ doesn’t measure intelligence, but in fact measure how well western kids do in western schools. A second part is the aforementioned discussion between the factions on what IQ depends on. A third topic that entangles into this is politicization of science, or just politics in general. Actors, even with clear political views themselves, argue against the politicization of science, they want science to be about science and not politics they say. This might seem quite contradictory in that many actors join this controversy because of political reasons. |

Super controversies also entangles our IQ dependency controversy. These are controversies, where ours about “what IQ depends on”, can be said to be but a part of. Controversies such as "what is intelligence?" is heavily debated - is logical understanding pure intelligence, or is there other forms of intelligence - such as emotional intelligence?
Another super controversy is about human races - do they even exist? Or is color just different pigment on the skin that people ascribe value?
Last but not least a super controversies that can be named is the age old discussion between nature and nurture. Do human behavior depend on nurture or nature? Is behavior decided by your genes, or by how you were raised?
Some sub controversies also establish themselves in our controversy. These are controversies that are a part of our controversy. These controversies are, to name a few, "how shall IQ be tested to measure what it depends on?" "Does IQ, and intelligence, increase over time and why?"
In concluding remarks it can be said that this site will provide a thorough explanation and a analysis of the different aspects of our controversy, what does IQ depend on?
